Learner in the Spotlight – Lucy

Gaining New Skills and Confidence to Return to Work

Why did you enrol for the courses?

“After taking an extended time out from working (15 years) to raise children, I needed to return to paid employment, and I didn’t think anyone would want to employ me after such a long time of not working. No references, no CV, no recent experience, no confidence! I saw a Wandsworth email advertising free courses.

I enquired and signed up for a number of courses that interested me and things I knew I was lacking: Learning the basics of Word and Excel, First time Manager and Building Resilience and Empowering Women to name just a few.”

What impact has the course had on you?

“The courses I have been on at Lifelong learning have been invaluable. I enjoyed being on site for the Word and Excel courses, it was exciting having somewhere to be each week, which was benefiting me, and I felt a new sense of purpose. Learning computer skills was challenging, I realised how basic I was before this course, and it was eye-opening what was possible. Things that would have taken me ages Raphael showed me how to do in a few clicks. It felt empowering to be able to add computer skills to my CV without feeling like a fake.”

Got the job!

“The online First time Manager course was very interesting; I learnt an immense amount. Donna enabled me to find skills I didn’t even realise I had, and how to set SMART goals that felt achievable. My confidence and knowledge soared, so much so that I sent my CV to a job I saw advertised and only went and GOT THE JOB! If I hadn’t done these courses, I have no doubt that I would never have had the guts to apply for this job. I still get imposter syndrome, but I remind myself that learning is continuous, and I am already looking at more courses for next year.”

Looking Forward

Despite still experiencing occasional feelings of imposter syndrome, Lucy reminds herself of the progress she’s made and the importance of lifelong learning and is aiming to focus on mastering platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Google Classroom, which are increasingly vital in today’s job market.

Advice to Others

If you’re considering enrolling in any of these courses, Lucy’s advice is simple: “…definitely do it! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Your confidence and employability will increase if you really apply yourself to the courses that are on offer.”

Enrolling in Wandsworth Council’s Lifelong Learning courses reignited Lucy’s passion for learning, equipped her with essential skills, and helped her re-enter the workforce with confidence.
