The Lifelong Learning team has been busy delivering Cooking on a Budget courses in Children’s Centres.
Tutor Yuki Solle, has a passion for inspiring parents how to make easy dishes, and how to get children involve in the process too.
Yuki has run 2 session recently. One at Faylands Children’s Centre and the other at Franciscan Children’s Centre.
Yuki said:
“The mums had fun making pizzas and chocolate brownies with their children, most comments were about how delicious the pizza and brownies were with such minimal ingredients. The pizza was tasty, and they could taste the basil and garlic, and it felt good to have nutritious food and to know the ingredients. The saving money parts were helpful and understanding costings and reducing food waste. As a result, a couple of mums are signing up to the Nutrition Level 2 course and Hospitality Supervision Level 3 course”.
We had encouraging feedback from parents:
‘I learned a lot about food waste’
‘I’m so surprised I don’t need to use yeast in my pizza dough, and just 2 every day ingredients!’
‘I will use these recipes with my children’
‘I feel more confident making this again at home’
Yuki’s Top Tips
- Involve children in preparing food so they can choose their own toppings and flavours
- Make kale crisps for fussy eaters – kale on its own can be boring for children but turning them into kale crips ( 7 minutes ) makes it very interesting, so think about different textures of foods – know the textures of food that your children like and work from that.
- Conduct a food waste audit – keep a record ( on your fridge for example) and work out in money values what you are throwing in the bin – then shop differently. Buy less of the products you are throwing away and look at alternatives for nutritional content.
- Keep well stocked staples such as flour, oils, and eggs then you can make bread, cakes or biscuits whenever you fancy and not need to run to the shops to spend money
- Think of alternatives, if you do not have butter, you can use oils to bake a cake!
If you’d like to get involved, this course will run as an evening class in two weekly sessions from the 14th-21st of May 2025 at the Gwynneth Morgan Centre. For more information and how to register, click here:
