September’s Learner in the Spotlight: Iryna. S

As part of a new series of posts, WCLL will focus on learners who have embarked on a learning journey with the determination to overcome challenging circumstances and transform their lives with a new course or qualification. In this article, we will explore the inspiring journey of Iryna, a determined learner who embarked on a language-learning experience with Wandsworth Council Lifelong Learning (WCLL).

ESOL Reading and Writing

One of the courses that Iryna participated in was the ESOL Reading and Writing programme. Through this course, she embarked on a journey towards enhancing her English language proficiency through developing her reading and writing skills.

Recognising the importance of verbal communication, Iryna decided to enrol for courses specifically designed to develop English speaking skills and grammar. Through interactive exercises and practical applications, she gained the confidence to express herself clearly in English.

Positively Presenting Yourself for Employment

Iryna then seized the opportunity to attend WCLL’s Positively Presenting Yourself for Employment course which equipped her with the necessary skills to develop a CV, improve her interview techniques, and effectively navigate the job market. With her newfound knowledge and skills, Iryna emerged as a confident and competitive job seeker.

From Language Barriers to Effective Communication

When Iryna first began her journey with WCLL, she faced significant challenges due to language barriers. English was a second language for her and understanding even simple conversations seemed like an overwhelming task. However, after just six months of study, she experienced a remarkable transformation. Iryna said: “When I began to study English courses…I barely spoke English and didn’t understand anything. After 6 months…I can speak English on simple topics, write simple letters and, much more, understand English speakers.”

Unlocking New Possibilities

Iryna’s determination to learn English has yielded results. As she became more proficient, she discovered a whole new world of possibilities. With improved language skills, Iryna was able to expand her social network, forging strong connections and meaningful friendships with people from various cultural backgrounds. These connections have enriched her life, providing her with a newfound sense of belonging in the English-speaking community.

Iryna’s Advice and Inspiration

Following her journey, Iryna is eager to share her advice with others who may be contemplating enrolling with WCLL.

Iryna’s advice to prospective learners is simple but powerful: “Don’t be afraid to study English.” She acknowledges that initially, the idea of learning a new language can be intimidating. However, she says that fear should not hold anyone back from pursuing their dreams. Iryna herself believed that it was impossible to learn a new language, particularly amidst the challenges she faced due to the Russian-Ukrainian war. She said, “I thought that it’s impossible to learn a new language, when…the Russian-Ukrainian war buried my dreams.” Nevertheless, she took the leap, and the opportunity to study English in the United Kingdom became a gift that allowed her to rebuild her life.

Embracing Chances and Making the Most of Difficult Situations

Iryna’s story is a shining example of resilience and determination. She encourages individuals to seize the chances offered to them, even in the face of adversity. By enrolling with WCLL and fully immersing herself in the learning experience, she was able to overcome difficulties and emerge stronger and more confident than ever before.

Iryna’s story serves as a testament to the invaluable resources and support provided by WCLL. So, if you are ready to embark on your own language-learning journey, don’t hesitate.
