We were pleased to be successful in our bid to run this project, funded by the European Integration Fund, UK Border Agency. The project aims to develop a programme of engagement and English classes for newly arrived migrant women with little or no English and who are not refugees or asylum seekers, European Union nationals or European Economic Area nationals.

Finding eligible learners does therefore present a challenge, but typically, learners would come from Pakistan, India, Turkey and South America. Additionally, the programme calls for the creation of a network of Migrant Learner Advocates, drawn from specific migrant communities to promote the programme and to encourage & support those who would benefit from it. These advocates are key to the success of the project and to date we have recruited 5 excellent members, who have taken part in an induction and training and who are now involved in outreach in their communities.

The hard work of the project operational team is starting to pay off with two classes set to start by the end of June and several more in the pipeline. We’re up and running and greatly looking forward to working with these new UK residents.

Learners are required to:

- be female

- have been in the UK for less than 5 years

- not be a refugee or assylum seeker

- not be in the UK on a student or tourist visa

- not be from a European Union or European Economic Community country.
